1. This study relates surgical experience with 213 patients of thyroid diseases inclurdling benign diseases and cancer treated at Deparment of Surgery of Chunnam University Hospital - from Jan.1970 to Dec. 1973. In this report,the distribution and -clinical aspetes of thyroid diseases in Chunnam area were discussed.
2. Seventy patients who received operations were composed of 59 cases of benign diseases-(84%) and 11 cases of thyroid cancers(16%).
3. The age distrbution of the benign thyroid diseases indicated a predominant incidence in the 2nd and 3 rd decade (52.5%). Female predominated over male by the ratio of 11 : 1. The most frequent duration of symptoms was the period of within-3 months, but the most of patients were in 2 years of period(85%).
4. Among 70 cases of histolgical diagnosis: the benign diseases included adenoma in 9 (15%), nodular goiter in 24(41%), diffuse colloid goiter in 4(7%), Grave´s disease in 3 (5%), Hashimoto´s disease in 2 (3%), and thyroid cyst in 17 cases (29%); the malignant tumor of the thyroid included differentiated adenoca in 1, Follicular adenoca in 2, papillary adenoca in 6, undifferentiated adenoca in 1 and squamous cell ca. in 1 case. The regional lymph nodes were metastasized in 3 cases(27%).
5. The solitary thyroid cysts were comprised 29% of benign diseases, which were very high in frequency than the reports of the other Korean authors. Excision of the mass or euncleation were performed in the most cases without any complications or recurrence.
6. Among 77 cases, I131scanning of thyroid revealed 59 cold nodules, 17 warm nodules and a hot nodule. All thyroid cysts and carcinomas were cold nodules.
7. Operative mortality was none. Postoperative complications were 4 cases of transient hoarsness, 1 of tetany, 1 of myxedema, 3 of laryngeal edema requiring tracheostomy, 3 of infection and keloid.
8. Literatures on the subjects were briefly reviewed.
